The Fool

The day wears on…

Here in the Mire, it can be hard to keep one’s bearings. By the time afternoon swings around, we find ourselves lost.

Upon scrabbling up a muddy bank, we hear a voice directly behind us. "Admit it, you’re lost! Your wires are all crossed!" Turning, we see a grinning woman standing below the bank. Dressed almost identically to ourselves, she seems to mock our quest. She stifles her giggles as she shows us her compass. But within the compass is only a trickster's mirror, from which our own faces stare back at us.

Grinning, the trickster hops neatly to the top of the bank. “I can show you the way to new ground. But you’ll have to follow, and not make a sound!” She begins to walk backwards into the Mire, her grin never failing…

Do we follow this strange character forward, or turn back towards camp?

The Conundrum

  • The travellers may first discuss between themselves.

  • Then, clockwise starting with the Reader, each traveller may take it in turns to choose whether to FOLLOW THE FOOL or TURN AWAY.
