The Groom

The day wears on…

Our path winds us through fields so moist and overgrown we dare not look at our feet. By midday, the stench of fermented earth is burrowed so deep into our noses that we wonder if we'll ever smell anything else again.

We stop for a brief respite on an island of hard ground — only to see a young man, sat nervously on a nearby stump. No more than twenty years of age, he is dressed for an occasion in a gold-flecked shawl and a ceremonial cummerbund. However, the translucent sheen of his skin marks him for what he truly is: a ghost.

Seeing us, the phantom grows suddenly hopeful. “Travellers! My apologies for bothering you, but I am in dire straits indeed. I am headed to meet with my bride; we planned to elope from a place near here. But I have no bride price to offer her, and I ashamed to show myself. Have you anything that might do for a gift?”

We cannot help but smile at the young man's naïveté. But still, if we help this spirit, he may in turn help us…

Otherwise, continue below.

The Challenge

The spirit of the Groom despairs of his future. Offer him one of the party’s Item to take as a bride price.

  • Each traveller individually chooses one of their Items to offer as a bride price. Travellers do not have to offer items, and can forfeit the Challenge instead.

  • Clockwise starting with the Reader, each traveller takes it in turn to put forward their chosen Item and argue why this Item might make a good bride price.

  • Following discussion, the party votes simultaneously on the most appropriate offering. Travellers cannot vote for their own choice.

HELP FROM AN ITEM

If any traveller carries a RING, they may put this item forward to automatically win the contest.
