The Scholar

Clutching our worn clothes to us, we hunker down to wait out the blizzard. The librarians go about their business, observing their eternal vigil.

The Scholar approves of your choice.

  • The traveller who voted to brave the cold first receives the Bargain of the Scholar.

HELP FROM AN ITEM

If any traveller who voted to brave the cold carries a QUILL, they may claim the Scholar’s Bargain instead.

We try to wait out the cold. But with no fire to warm us, it is hard indeed. We huddle together for warmth, praying to the spirits we have already met on our journey to help us.

The spirits who support you attempt to protect you against the cold. But are they strong enough?

  • If any traveller possesses a Blessing or Bargain, they must now place it in the middle.

Success. If the total number value of the Blessings and Bargains is twenty or more, you successfully wait out the cold. Return the Blessings and Bargains to their owners.

Failure. If the combined number value is nineteen or less, one of you suffers frostbite. Discard the Blessing with the highest number value (if there is a tie, discard Wilds before Scrolls before Moons before Cups). Return all Blessings and Bargains to their owners. If there are no Blessings to discard, discard the highest-valued Bargain. If there are no Blessings or Bargains, this has no effect.

At last, the blizzard eases. But darkness is already falling; we decide that we will sleep here tonight.
