The Torturer

The day wears on…

We pass through a field of snags where a fire has clearly raged. The trees stand blackened and burned, the soil brittle as glass.

Ahead, a decrepit barn rears through the brush. It is a farm — someone’s family farm, now long abandoned. But as we enter, we see that the edifice has seen other uses in the time since that fire. The floor is littered with strange implements: forks, thumbscrews, branding irons, some still fouled with dark streaks of blood. Someone made their home here — someone with an appetite for pain.

Even as we blanch, gorge rising in our throats, a sinister presence overwhelms us. We are consumed by a sudden vision: ourselves, writhing in pain, while our pitiless fellow travellers stand above. They are torturing us.

A vile voice echoes in our heads. "Deliver your friends to me… before they deliver you..."

The Conundrum

The Torturer demands an offering of pain. Should that suffering be yours or another traveller’s?

  • The travellers may not discuss.

  • Clockwise starting with the Reader, each traveller may take it in turns to choose to INFLICT PAIN or to SUFFER. As soon as any traveller chooses to inflict pain, stop and click through below.
