The Waters

The day wears on…

We pass through mountain tunnels winding and narrow. Towards dusk, we hear a sound ahead: the deafening roar of water. Emerging from our cave, we find ourselves looking down on a vast, hundred-foot waterfall — and we are standing on the wrong side.

But as we stare down into the waterfall’s misted depths, we see that all is not lost. Stepping stones rise on great columns from the water, a slippery path forward. It will be a perilous crossing — but at this point in our journey, we must take the risk.

The Challenge

Cross the stones without missing a step!

  • Gather and place the deck on the table.

  • Starting with the Reader and moving clockwise, each traveller takes it in turns to try and spread the deck forward as far as possible in one smooth, fanning motion. Travellers can only touch one finger to the deck, and cannot touch it more than once.

  • If the continuous fan is broken at any point, the traveller is eliminated.

  • When a traveller has finished, mark the furthest point the deck reached, then reset. The next traveller must attempt to bypass that mark.

  • The game ends when every traveller has taken their turn.

HELP FROM AN ITEM

If any traveller carries a FLASK, they may attempt the fan twice.

Success. If less than half the party is eliminated, the Challenge is passed.

Failure. If half of the party or more is eliminated, the party bungles their crossing and the Challenge is failed.

If the Challenge is passed, the traveller who fanned their cards the furthest wins the Blessing of The Waters.

If the Challenge is failed, the party suffers the Curse of the Waters.

With a few stumbles, we make it to the fall’s far side. As we pause to catch our breaths, a great inhuman laugh rises from the rapids. Turning tail, we run.

  • Re-form the deck before continuing.
